bad smell and taste

by tiggerbengal, Jan 02, 2004 12:00AM
I am 27 years old.  Since 1997, I've had a bad smell/taste.  I finally went and saw my GP on 5/03 *because I got so tired of it, I thought it'd eventually go away*, who did a CT Scan, which showed sinusitis.  They gave me biaxin for 2 wks, which didnt help.  I saw an ENT who Id seen back in 1997 & she gave me levaquin for 3 weeks, with no improvement.  I got a referral to another ENT, & he gave me augmentin for 4 weeks, guafenicen, & also presdidone to take for 4 days.  No improvement.  Another ct scan showed it got worse, & fluids were still there.  I had endoscopic sinus surgery on 11/19/03.  He said on my right side there was a cyst he removed, and that it was trapping mucous.  It has been a month and a half, and I am still having the bad smell & taste.  It happens out of the blue, and it just doesnt go away.  I have it for days, weeks at a time.  Nothing makes it go away.  I try to cough it up, and it just stays, the smell & taste.  I told him a week after the surgery, that it was still there, and the 2nd time I saw him, too.  He told me I need to be patient.  I told him I want to be tested for allergies, too, but he wants me to wait til I am healed.  What else can this be??  Is it possible because I waited for so long between 1997 - 2003, that whatever I had, damaged my sinuses to the point, they are permanently damaged?  It seems also, when I breathe thru my nose, it causes this smell/taste to occur.  But, to have it for weeks and days at a time, would it be allergy related?  I'm almost tempted to go see another ENT, but I really like this one.
Help!

The most likely cause of this is a continued chronic sinus infection.  This could be of fungal origin.  Therefore none of the antibiotics you took would be effective in getting rid of the infection.  Another CT scan is indicated to see what is still going on.  It is highly unlikely that there is any allergic cause for this.  Your best bet is to continue the sinus infection evaluation and treatment process.

And, if it a fungus, how do they treat it?  I wan on lamisil for a toe infection.  I am assuming if it were a fungus, the lamisil would have cured it?  Heck, even the sinus irrigation isnt working.
