hi, im 21 yo, smoker for 7 years but i stopped already and just recently i've had a really bad cough and cold. self medicated for a week with antibiotics and then after 3 days i started coughing out sputum with a little amount of blood everymoning when i wake up. after coughing and spitting for about 3 times and drinkning water the blood is gone. but then the following morning it comes back again.. i've had it for 2 weeks now. i dont have cough althroughout the day i just have a constant need to clear my throat which results to coughing. i think its from my nose.. can anyone help me? my doctor thinks its not serious and just prescribed me with bronchodilators and antibiotics..

blood in your sputum can be a sign of pneumonia. i have had pneumonia 5/6 times and the worst three times, i was coughing up blood. make sure you see your doctor!!

Hi Chris, This is how my first lung infections surfaced- with blood in my sputum- however it didn't go away when I drank water- it was present in the deep secretions I coughed up. You should see a pulmonary doctor and they can do a test where they stick a lighted scope up your nose to examine the nasal pasages, airway to see for inflamation, bloodvesels, etc. That was what they first did to me.  It is done right in the office and that helps them distinguish where it is coming from and why to help rule out other things first. It could be the first sign of an infection or it could be just from some soars in the nose higher up, like a polyp that are bleeding, etc.

Hi Chris,
It does sound like its coming from your nose, sounds like a sinus infection but those can be serious to.If you start coughing up blood at other times then I would go back to the doctor and ask for a chest x-ray. It took me going twice before they gave me one, and I found out I had abcesses in my lung. Good Luck
