It is good that the doctor is doing a sputum culture, an infection could easily be the source of blood in his sputum. The culture will be able to pin point the type of infection present if there is any along with the best antibiotics that would work best for it.
I think the doc will rule out causes one by one, especially if he continues to bring up blood in his sputum. If he doesn't cough up any more blood, that is a good thing. Another cause for blood in sputum is irritation. If your husband has had a sore throatCancer - throat or larynx Throat swab culture or has been coughing, that could be why.
