Start doing this breathing technique, twice a day. Get your haemoglobin(iron) level checked.
Let me know how you feel after 3 weeks.
Build up your timing gradually. If you feel tired or dizzy, stop and resume after one minute.
Kapalbhati pranayam -(Do it before eating) Push air forcefully out through the nose about once per second. Stomach will itself go in(contract in). The breathing in(through the nose) will happen automatically. Establish a rhythm and do for 20 to 30 minutes twice a day. Children under 15 years – do 5 to 10 minutes twice a day.
Not for pregnant women. Seriously ill people do it gently.

Hi Rob,
You didn't mention your age or if you are a smoker.  What do you do in the building trade? Are you exposed to saw dust, drywall dust, glues, industrial chemicals?
If you are a roofer, you could have been exposed to mildew or mold while tearing off old, rotted wood and shingles. That can cause shortness of breath, too.
See a doctor and ask if you could get a chest x-ray and blood work done. You need to start somewhere.
Good luck to you and better breathing as well.
