chest discomfort

how is copd defined to one disease, my mother has copd (bronchial) and is on oxygen steady. ,she has been told she has sticky lungs? I now have been diagosed with the same and have quit smoking. ,can you explain this to me .My Mom is 86 yrs old I am 63.
