chest pain and trouble breathing while running

by Dawnfire, Dec 31, 2004 12:00AM
I am 19 years old and run almost 5 times a week as I am in the military, but about 95% of the time I start having chest pains.  I'll start running and maybe half a mile into it it feels like there's a rock sitting on my chest, and it hurts to breath.  The pain seems to spread into my right shoulder but stays in my chest as well.  Sometimes it's worse and sometimes it isn't so severe.
I saw a doctor before but he said it could be a pulled muscle, but it hasn't gotten better and it has been several months.
I just wondered what it could possibly be, or if it's simply something I'm going to have to put up with because it's normal.
Any help you could give would be much appreciated.
Thanks

What you have described could be due to a pulled muscle.  However it could also be a sign of more serious problem, even at age 19.  Your description of a "rock sitting on my chest" is not normal.

You should be seen by the doctor again for a thorough exam.  At a minimum you should have a chest x-ray and an exercise study with electrocardiogram (EKG).
