choking after coughing

Hi my wife (45)4 weeks ago had heartburn for the first time she then developed a tickly cough which gradually became more frequent about 2 weks ago she started wakening with this cough after coughing she could not get a breath in or out which lasted from 10 -30secs which is very frightning she has attended hospital who say there is no blockage and allowed her to go home after a 2 day spell they say there is nothing wrong with her and they will arrange a night in a sleep clinic she is not stressed or does not panic they have given her antacids to take is there anyway to stop this tickly cough which is triggering the choking  also what is the problem

Hi, I'm sorry to hear about your wife.

Is she choking during her cough attacks, or is it after?  If it's during, she may have the whooping cough.  I suffered from it in 2004.  And actually, it may be coming back for me.  I just had an attack tonight at 5am.  I wish the best for your wife...and you!

Reflux is a common cause of night time coughing. There are definitely medications to treat the reflux to control the acid causing the cough.  If the antacids do not work, there are other agents that can be given to help control this problem.  It is best to control the stomach problem rather than the cough.
