chronic bronchitis and high sea elevation

My husband and I want to move to Prescott Arizona (elevation 5000 feet). He has chronic bronchitis and is concerned about the sea elevation. He is in pretty good medical condition and he is 74 years old. We have been told that most people aclimate to the change in altitude after a period of time. And ideas?
