collapsed lung? pulmonary embolism? Just not sure

by mythoughtexactly, Jan 14, 2004 12:00AM
I am hoping someone can advise me because I am very uncertain as to what to do. About four years ago I had a collapsed lung that required hospitalization with a chest tube. The pain was moderate not as terrible for me as most people say it was for them. While I was in the hosp. they did several scans to see y the lung was not reinflating and they found an air pocket. I knew where the airpocket was because to me that was more painful than the collapsed lung. I have had bouts since then with the same pain as the airpocket and when I straighten up and take a deep breath the pain becomes much more intense but it makes it go away. This happens every couple of months and only lasts for about 10 seconds if that. A few days ago I got the same airpocket pain but it did not go away. Each time I would take a breath the pain was pretty bad. It lasted from 9:00pm until 6:00am and even then it was still there but very insignificant pain. However two days later I started experiencing severe back pain but only when I breath in. It does not hurt to cough bend twist just breathing in. The pain is still here and was very sever this morning but has eased after a shower but is coming back. It is in the middle to lower back mainly middle and at times radiates around to my sides at my waist.I did have a problem a few days before the airpocket pain with my wrist on the inside was sore swollen and red possible blodclot & was wondering if it could have cause an embolism in lung and  chest pain was actually a collapsed lung that healed itself but the air escaped or went to my back.isitposiblewhatuthink

A blood clot to the lung, from the wrist, would be an extremely rare event.  In addition, you’ve been having this recurrent pain for a long time before the wrist swelling.  A pulmonologist would be the type of specialist to determine the medical cause of this “airpocket” and its treatment.

It is likely that this pain is not coming from the lung at all.  It could even be from a compressed nerve.  You need to see a specialist.
