colonized bacteria nasal/sinus

olonized bacteria cultured: klebsiella oxytoca and Staphylococcus aureus

Problems encountered: heavy volume of sticky-white mucus drying out throat, mouth and nasal areas;
soft palate sticking to throat blocking nasal passage to throat.  Difficult to get supplemental oxygen to lungs with nasal cannula when blockage occured.  Cpap set at level 9 unable to force air through the barrier.  Pulse nasal/sinus irrigation only effective means of removing some of the blockage.

Recent antibiotic use

Oct 2011 - Z pak
3/22/2012 Starting SULFAMETHOXAZOLE-TMP D 800 - 160 TABS
4/10/2012  Started using #50 C-MUPIROCIN 5GM IN SAL NASAL spray twice daily
5/18/2012 Started 9 day course of DOXYCYCLINE HYCLATE - infection acting up
6/15/2012 infection acting up again - wouldn't wash away and MUPIROCIN not stopping it
6/18/2012 SULFAMETHOXAZOLE-TMP D 800-160

Currently using BETADINE in pulse irrigation solution twice daily and MUPIROCIN twice daily.

What can I do to get rid of the colonized bacteria?

This variety of Klebsiella Oxytoca is an uncommon cause of disease and found primarily in the intestine.  That it would be cultured from the nose and/or sinuses raises the question of an immunodeficiency disorder.  The question to be answered is, Is this just colonization, the cause of the thick mucous or is it actually an invasive infection.  If what you have is just colonization, it might not be necessary to eradicate the Klebsiella and, as this organism is typically resistant to multiple antibiotics, perhaps impossible.

Should it not be possible to eliminate the blockage, surgically or otherwise, the provision of supplemental oxygen via the mouth or directly  into the trachea, might allow for the effective use of oxygen.

My advice is that you be tested for immunodeficiency and that you request consultation with an Infectious Disease specialist.  With the exception of antibiotic eradication of infection, there is no effective way to alter the physical characteristics (thick) of mucous.

Good luck
