cough throughout the day, dry

i'm 20 and went camping and develop a cough about 5 weeks ago(did not sleep in a tent and it was begin of winter but not to cold), there is no fever and no phloem, I am a smoker, but this cough came out of no where, I did not have a cold, no nasal symptoms, just a dry cough going on for 5weeks, it disturbs my sleep, I do not cough all day, its like I have these cough spells throughout the day, I have no insurance so wanted to go to doctor but seeing if I'm overrating, my mother says the cough has gone on to long, please help
