coughing and lots of mucus after each and every meal

at first i thought i had food allergies but i am thinking that it is something else now.  after each meal no matter what i eat i get to coughing so much that sometimes i vomit or start choking myself.  it gets very scary and it is hard to breath while this is going on, somedays it lasts like 10-15 minutes and others it last hours.  this has been going on for years i was going to mention it to the doctor but i thought that it was a food allergy so i started to eliminate foods i was eating each time that it happened and before i knew it i was not able to eat anything.  can you tell me what might be causing this?  if there is something i can do at home about it or if i should just talk to the doctor about it?

This does not at all suggest food allergy.

Your episodes of coughing may be due to a swallowing problem.  If your vocal cords and/or windpipe are not closing properly when you swallow you could be aspirating. ·When this happens some of what you are swallowing will get into your windpipe and lungs.  You should just talk to the doctor about it.  Generally the first test is a barium swallow to look at the structure of your esophagus, to check your swallowing, and to find the cause of the swallowing problem.

DEFINITELY speak with a doctor promptly.  S/he can examine you and help determine what is going on.  There is no reason you should allow yourself to have this problem for so long--please make an appointment and get checked out.  This type of situation cannot be diagnosed by internet and should not be allowed to persist for years.

Agreed...many things can be going on here....aspiration of food should be ruled out!  see your health care provider...

I finally worked up enough courage to go to the doctor.  I found out that all of my excess mucus was about disease of the airways.  I was given MEDROL 4 Mg. Dosepak and told that THIS Is the only thing that can cure it.

Prior to going to the doctor, I used various antibiotics to try and cure this ailment but NOTHING was successful.

Nevertheless, I took MEDROL before and it worked WELL.

I was also given zrytec and an albuterol pump.

I was told that I have a bit of asthma also.  Asthma tends to develop in a lot of people with allergies.  The cause is unknown.

Well, I couldn't leave you all stranded out there. I just went to the PROPER doctor on 2-19-04 and got what I KNEW I needed all alone.

Good luck to you all and do not be afraid.  Talk to your doctor and ask them if you have disease of the airways and asthma.  Then ask them if Medrol would be an option for you.

I know how you felt because after every meal and many times before, the fluid would bubble in my chest until I coughed it up.

This is my 3rd day of taking the medication and I feel a HUGE change.

If you have a JPS (John Peter Smith) clinic near, go there.
