cryptic tonsils

I am 65 and have cryptic tonsils.  I'm terrified of having my tonsils out.  My tonsils are filling every few days.  What options do I have?

I have had tonsil stones for two years! I generally gargle freguently and brush my tonsil (makes you gag) or poke them out with cotton bud!

I really dont want tonsilectomy, specially as I work on ENT ward, im more scared of the anaesthetic than anything!

I think ill continue to poke them out however im going ask at work about cautery (or something to seal my tonsils together as sometimes get bad breath

As any one got a water pik? thinking of buying one? but expensive

I have been dealing with tonsil stones for some time now.  I have had success getting rid of them with a water pik.  There's some good information on the website I built regarding this very topic at tonsilstones.net.

Really, why are you scared to get you tonsils removed?  I had them out when I was young and it seems to be an easy operation.

wow i have had this for years and thought it was normal lol
i thought id google it. i had no idea what it was.
i have suffered from severe toncilites all my life i usually have it 2-3 time a month i have had about 5 referals for them to be removed and i never hear anything back. i really want them out they are agony and a burden on me. they put me in bed for about 3 weeks sometimes and you can emagine what efect that has on my family and work life. the worst thing  is im a low income worker and cant afford to pay for them to be taken out.

My grandmother is a doctor and i have spoken to her about my tonsil stones problem. She said that I have weak immune system which for some people causes cryptic tonsils due to not enough vitamins in your system. And once you get cryptic tonsils all the food particles are likely to get stuck in their on their way down creating sonsil stones and with it very stinky breath. So she said that the best way to get rid of this problem is to 1. Take vitamins to support your immune system, 2. Gargle your throat with sea salt and water after every meal, 3. Gargle your throat with eucalyptus and water (eucalyptus is a good antiseptic and tonsil stones is a form of minor infection) 4. Brush you toung every time you brush your teeth to get all the gunk off of it as it contributes to creation of tonsil stones. Also you may get betadine antiseptic throat gargle and use that for a bit. My grandmother strongly believes that it is best to not remove your tonsils as they are a barrier to many worse infections that you may get. I have been doing what she has suggested only for a couple of days but i thought id share it with everyone who is suffering with the same problem. Good luck.

I have had tonsil stones off an on for a few years. I found that they are easily removed by dabbing a q-tip swab in a little hydrogen peroxide. Then I just dab, very gently each tonsil. The bubbles from the Hydrogen peroxide pushes the stones out. Then I rinse with fresh water.

to mums_girl,
I can't believe no one's gotten back to you! Do you have insurance? I would make another appointment with your MD next time this occurs and demand an explanation as to why, despite talking about surgery, no one's followed up with you. ADVOCATE FOR YOUR HEALTH everyone because no one in the health system will do it for you - trust me, I work there. If you have a consultation with a surgeon and he/she never calls you back, CALL THEM BACK!!! The caps aren't meant to infer anger - I really feel for you and I am appalled that no one's helped you.

Hi Katie:  I'm so sorry that I didn't write back to you in 2009 - tell your grandmother that she is right on as I do have a weak immune system.  I will follow her advice.
Sincerely,Imogene65
