crystals on the lungs

My mother, 49 yr old, is in hospital. Dr's are testing for Lupus, and advised that there are crystals on her lungs? What can the crystals be from? Mother is a smoker and has been for about 30 yrs. She was also on a vent for 4 days and has pnemonia (pneumonia) as a result of that.
