You are young to have severe emphysema, especially emphysema that resulted in lung surgery.  When a person your age develops severe emphysema, it is possible that you have an inherited form of emphysema, called alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency.  If you have it, other family members may also have it.  You should ask your doctor to test your blood for this disorder.  There is treatment for it that can slow the progression of the disease and perhaps add years to your life.

You can go to this website for more information – http://www.alphaone.org/

You are right.  Damage from emphysema is not curable, but at some point, you might be a candidate for a lung transplant.

In addition, there are medicines, such as long-acting inhaled bronchodilators, that can give you symptom relief.  Examples of these include Serevent® Inhalation Aerosol (salmeterol xinafoate), Foradil® Aerolizer™ (formoterol fumarate inhalation powder), Advair™ Diskus® (fluticasone propionate and salmeterol) Inhalation Powder, and Spiriva® HandiHaler® (tiotropium bromide inhalation powder).
