excessive coughing

by jpre15, Jul 16, 2007 12:00AM
I have been coughing for close to 5 years. It is constant when I am sitting down. If I am walking, exercising or lieing down, I don't seem to cough at all.
I have been to two allegists, two ear nose and throat Dr. and cardialogists so far. I have been given every kind of pill, inhaler and nose spray but nothing helps. I cough up mucusand sometimes throw up mucus. My throat hurts from coughing and sometimes my chest. I have had chest exrays and cat scans and cameras down my nose. NOTHING SEEMS TO HELP

That your cough is related to body position, only while seated, suggests that the cause is anatomical.  This may be accentuated by gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or postnasal drip (PND).  If it is PND, nasal washes followed by a prescription nasal steroid spray might be more effective than either alone.  A nasal steroid spray does not provide immediate relief of symptoms.  It may need to be used every day for several weeks to months for it to help.  To get the most out of a nasal steroid spray use it after doing a nasal wash.  A nasal wash helps remove mucus from the nose and sinuses.  Please read our nasal wash treatment information at http://www.nationaljewish.org/disease-info/treatments/alt-ther/nasal-wash.aspx to learn more about this technique.  Share this information with your doctor to see if you would benefit from this daily treatment.
