Does anyone know anything about an expanded ribcage with emphysema..I have noticed by chest and ribs bones have expanded outward. Also, does anyone know if this is genetic or because I smoked or both..

It is not uncommon to have a "barrell" chest or hyperinflation from emphysema or chronic bronchitis.  Both conditions trap air and make it hard to get rid of.  The lungs and chest expand because there is so much trapped air.

Whether the patient has emphysema from smoking, genetics or both, when the lungs put enough pressure on the chest because the air is trapped, the chest will expand.
