globbs of phlem causes feeling of choking.

by constant choking, Oct 11, 2001 12:00AM
I am 76 year old male, diagnosed with emphasyma and have had asthma. Lately I feel that phlem is building up in my nasal passages and causes a feeling of constant choking.  When I lay down it feels worse so I haven't been able to sleep. To make matters worse is my legs are swollen and my stomach is bloated.
Medications I am taking are:Lasix, albutrol and serveral others.
Any suggestions are greatly welcome.

Sincerely,
Constant choking

It sounds like there are a couple of things that could be causing your symptoms. The phlegm in your nasal passages is likely the result of a sinus condition that generally responds well to a nasal steroid spray. The swelling in your legs and stomach may be associated with a complication of emphysema that causes a weakening in the function of the right side of the heart. Lasix helps to lessen this build up fluid. It is important for you to discuss these symptoms with your doctor. Also, it may be helpful for you to be evaluated for your oxygen level at rest, exercise and with sleep.
