infected with TB

I have had the skin test for TB and was positive (12mm), went for chest X-Rays which showed lungs to be clear.  Thereafter, was told that I could go on medication for 9 months to kill the TB bacteria but because I'm 37, it is not recommended due to the fact that the medication could cause liver problems.  I was then told that although my lungs are clear, the TB could be somewhere else in my body.  My question :  Is this correct and is there a possibility of me passing this onto the rest of my family.  If the TB is sitting somewhere else in my body, what would the symptoms be.

A positive tuberculosis (TB) skin test means that you were exposed to TB and your immune system has effectively contained the germ. Since your chest x-ray was normal, you probably don't have active pulmonary (lung) disease, are not contagious and cannot pass the TB to someone else.  However, if you have disease in the kidneys or elsewhere you could have symptoms of that organ.
There is a 10% chance that you will develop active disease in your lifetime (the percentage is higher the first few years).  Therefore it is important that you seek medical care immediately if any symptoms of TB develop, such as cough, coughing up blood, decreased appetite, weight loss, fever, night sweats.  If the TB is non-pulmonary you cannot transfer it to someone else.  Symptoms would vary with the organ involved.

a positive skin test only means you have been exposed to TB sometime in your life and have developed antibodies to it. It does not mean you have TB. I would talk to your doctor about the results. You could have been exposed a long time ago. He or she could follow up with testing such as a CT scan or MRI that will show TB if it is present. The other place that I have heard of TB is in the bone( spine in the case I know of and that is not contagious)Hope this helps.
