infections from rats

if a person has been in contact with rat droppings and urin, what should they do if they are feeling sick. They have aches and pains and is not realy up to par.

I'd also would like to know. We've been cleaning up an attic in Florida and it seems that the whole family has been exposed in some way to rat dropping fumes/dust for years. Could this be the cause of long lasting cough seasons? Runny noses in our kids? What effects would you see in the person who did the cleaning - he used protective gear but still had a sore throat the next day.
