infiltrate?

by jellybeanorg, Jun 23, 2004 12:00AM
I recently had a PA chest x-ray done and the result said possible infiltrate in left lower lobe. I know this can possibly mean TB but what I don't know is can it mean anything else or even nothing at all. Any guidance on this would be so helpful. Thanks!

An infiltrate looks like a shadow on a chest x-ray.  There can be many causes, such as:
· an infection, like pneumonia or tuberculosis (TB);
· a blockage of an airway by a tumor or mucus; or
· a non-infectious pneumonia usually caused by something inhaled or aspirated.

You will need to check with your doctor to know what would be causing your infiltrate and the best treatment.  A chest CT scan is more sensitive and shows more detail than a chest x-ray, so this may be the next test that is done.
