I so agree that you wanting to donate a lung to your aunt is very brave and makes you a truly caring person. You must love your dear Aunt very much. I wish I had good news about you donating your Aunt one of your lungs. My Mother received a single lung transplant in 2007. A lung cannot be taken from a live donor though. The lung has to be harvested from a very recently deceased donor. And I so hate telling you this, but getting approved for a lung transplant is lengthy and much is involved. They put my Mother through many many tests. She had a lung disease called idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Which is a terminal lung disease. She had to enroll in pulmonary rehabilitation, to build up her lungs. Then, a board had to decide, if she was a candidate for a transplant, after she went through all this. It took 2 yrs., before they would approve her for the lung transplant. I do know, that they once use to put each new possible lung transpant patient, at the bottom of the transplant list. But, in April 2007, that rule was changed. Now, the most critical patients are put at the top of the list. My Mother was on the cutting edge of this new rule and was put at the top of the lung transplant list. Another thing that greatly helps being considered for a lung transplant, is having a very good doctor, that helps push for the possible transplant. Mother had an excellent pulmonary specialist, that helped my Mother, get her foot in the door, of being seen by the transplant team. I wish with all my heart, that my answers were what you wanted and needed to hear. Once again, you are a wonderful person, to want to do this for your Aunt. But, I suggest seeking out the possibility of a lung transplant for your Aunt. Miracles do happen. God Bless You
