lung function

My dad was just told that his lungs were only functioning at 40%, that he has lost the other 60.  Does nyone know what that means?  He does not tell me everything.

I once read that if the lungs are functioning at 30%, you can try to get a lung transplant.  In any case, 40% does not sound good.  Linda

Overall lung function primarily involves the elasticity of the lungs (their ability to inflate/deflate) and extract oxygen through the alveolar membrane. A loss of 60% is bad, but usually can be treated with medications such as Advair and Albuterol, and with supplemental oxygen.
