lung transplant

by AAAHUbbard, May 14, 2003 12:00AM
It has been recommended by my doctor to have a lung transplant.  Is there anyone that can tell me what the procedure entails, how long does one have to wait to receive a lung, the recovery time, and what restrictions are imposed when having a lung transplant?
Also does the time vary of how long a lung that is transplanted will last, and can person have 2 lung transplants in a lifetime?
Thank you.

National Jewish Medical and Research Center treats lung problems medically.  There are no surgical facilities here.  So lung transplants are not done at National Jewish.  Please check with the program coordinator at a major lung transplant center.  To locate the lung transplant center closets to you please call the United Network for Organ Sharing at 1 (888) 894-6361.  This would be the best resource for the answer to your questions.

Forgot to mention that my chest muscles get very tight when I become short of breath or cough.  Is it possible that my lungs are just not expanding and that is the tightness I experience?  What does "iron lung" mean? This happens even while using oxygen on levels 5 and 6.
Thank you.
