hi im 20 and when i was 18 i had a pleurectomy after having 2 spontaneous pneumothorax's afterwards the surgeon said i wont have anymore on that side of my lung and about 3 weeks ago i had another spontaneous pneumothorax on that side i am waiting to go see the surgeons but im worried about whats going to happen could someone shed a little bit of light on this area please
No procedure, even when performed well, (the pleurectomy) can guarantee absolute prevention of recurrence. The answer to your question about how to proceed depends upon the size of the current pneumothorax. If it is relatively small, no treatment may be indicated. In general it would be best, if at all possible, for you to avoid further invasive (especially surgical) procedures on your chest. Be hesitant to agree to such an approach
What I suggest is that you seek an opinion from a non-surgeon lung specialist (Pulmonologist), if at all possible one experienced in the management of recurrent pneumothorax.
Dr. Stephen Sahn is a nationally recognized expert on such matters. I suggest that you or your doctor contact him, either for consultation or for his recommendation of an expert in your geographical area.
