never smoked

i have suffered with chronic bronchitis off and on for a few years now. as of this past spring, i have had to use an inhaler several times a day. i havent been diagnosed with asthma but if i accidently breathe in someone's cig smoke as i enter or exit a store i start wheezing. Christmas eve I ran to the market for 1 food item, forgot to hold my breath when i exited the store, didnt think to take my inhaler since i was only going to be gone 10 mins, but i sucked in some smoke and down i went. i was almost in the hospital.
what i dont understand is this, ... how can i have chronic bronchitis if i have NEVER IN MY LIFE smoked ??? everything i read sats that non-smokers with chronic bronchitis are former smokers, ... i'm not.
whats the deal? is there some other way that i might have gotten this disease? I did work at a shipyard for 13 years. 7 of those years on-board navy ships during ships overhaul and renovations.
I'm really confused, ... and sick, .. and upset ,, and a bit scared. (during those times when my chest hurts and i break out in a sweat)
what could have cause this ?
