Hyperinflated lungs can occur with either asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).  Asthma is usually reversible.  The latter, COPD, is for the most part not reversible but can worsen with exercise.  Hyperinflation does not cause damage to the lungs but does contribute to shortness of breath.  The observation of hyperventilation should lead to a follow-up with spirometry, before and after bronchodilator, to accurately measure your current lung function.

You made a very important choice to stop smoking.  Stick with that decision for a better life, both now and as you get older.
