oxygen and weak breathing

by keys, Dec 24, 2004 12:00AM
weak breathing caused either by als, or emphysema was suspect, in either event , testing isnt complete yet,
have problem with wheezing, non productive cough.
when talking oxygen levels drop below normal,
have been given in home oxygen but am not allowed to leave it on for any length of time just a few minnutes at a time.
not allowed to fall asleep with it
i didnt understand why, they said it could kill me.
could u explain why someone with weak or shallow breathing should not have oxygen continually, how can it kill a person and what should i let my caretaker know if something would happen what could happen?
the nasal canulas are set at 4 and the mask at five.
just need a clearer explaination , thankyou.

You may or may not need oxygen.   What you need first is a firm diagnosis.   You will then need ABG's (arterial blood gases), both at rest and with exercise. The ABG’s should also be done while breathing room air and while on oxygen.   You then should have a sleep study to determine if you need oxygen.  They will also determine your flow rate and appropriate delivery method.

You need to have more clarification from whatever doctor prescribed the oxygen for you.  I have never heard of oxygen prescribed for "just a few minutes at a time."  Please ask your doctor to clarify so you and your caregiver can understand how you are supposed to properly use oxygen.

I have purchased a pulse oximeter, with the approval and consent of my pulmonologists.  I use it to determine what my oxygen saturation levels are and to keep my saturation rates at or above 90% all the time.  Pulse oximeters should be available from the oxygen supply company to rent or borrow, or they can be purchased on-line for about $200-$350 or so.  Some insurers will reimburse, but most won't.

I would definitely have someone make a call to your doctor for more clarification about how you're supposed to use oxygen.  People should keep their oxygen saturation levels at about 90% or above, and to prevent strain on our bodies or damage to our heart or other organs.

GOod luck!
