phlem or something in my airway

by normaj39, Mar 07, 2005 12:00AM
I have been sick for about two weeks now.  i have been taking mucinex dm.  At first, i was coughing up phlem (yellow or white)and had excess mucous coming out of my nose when i blow it.  My nose has been clear for about a week now....thats all better.  My cough seems to be completely gone.  Except, now i cough on purpose to try to get out of my airway on the left side of my neck some leftover mucous.  It feels as though it is near the inside of my ear.  On the outside, if you touch the bone to the left of your throat on your neck...it feels as though it is lodged there.  I am not sick anymore, but this is very irritating to me.  No matter how hard i cough, i cant get this mucous out.  I dont need to cough, but like i said, i make myself cough, sometimes so hard that pee will come out.  coughing this hard still will not bring it out.  It is only on my left side, but very bothersome.  I can say that i am completely cured of being sick.....except for that.  But now that i make myself cough so hard....my throat is starting to be sore.  How can I get this to go away?  My dr. has moved to open her own practice about 70 miles away.  I havnt found a new one yet, because i havnt needed one.  I did remember the last time i saw her for congestion, she recommended the mucinex dm, and it worked.  That is why i chose that this time.  It worked again, except for the small little piece still lodged.  What can i do?  I am tired of making myself cough, getting a sore throat from it, and peeing on myself.  If it were sinuses draining would it be that deep and only on the left side? Pleasehelp

The first thing to do is to telephone your doctor, who moved away.  This is the person who knows you and your conditions better than anyone.  It is possible that the phlegm truly is "hung-up" in your throat.  Eventually it will go away but, in the meantime, I would recommend that you gargle several times a day and do nasal washes 2-3 times a day.  Please read our Nasal Wash MedFact at http://www.nationaljewish.org/medfacts/nasal.html for more information about this technique. If another 1-2 weeks passes without improvement, you should check with an ENT doctor, who will be able to directly visualize your throat.

I am frustrated also with the doctors.  They just refer you to ents, pulmonary specialists, there is so much that is truly unkown by the doctors. They give you medications that really don't seem to help.  It's just a guessing game. It's all in who you want to take your chances with. All of the symptoms lean towards  allergies and asthma, so it seems this may be why they can't determine the exact illness.  I have been suffering for the past two years with chronic phlegm build-up.  Some days are better that others.  I always seem to have lower back soreness and when I take a shower I have to hit my chest to make the phlegm come out.  I can't generate enough force during a cough to force the phlegm out.  When I brush my teeth in the morning I get sick because of so much phlegm throughout the night.  I feel like I don't get enough oxygen.  Since this occurred, I have gained about 15 lbs.  I just don't seem to have as much energy. I use to very active, working out 5 days a week, I'm lucky if I can last a 1/2 hour.  I tried running one lap of the track and shortly there after I started coughing. Throughout that night and that next day I was coughing up yellow phlegm.  I'm not sure what this means, but I really don't want to go to the doctors and waste my money.  They'll just give me some nose spray, inhalers and send me on my way.  If anyone can help please feel free to email me at tes_scott***@****   Thank you.  Good Luck Everyone!
