pneumonia and blood in pleural cavity

My mother had 4 by-passes, mitral valve repair and the ex-maze procedure on 11-23-07.  One week later she had some fluid in her left lung pleural space, which was withdraw with thorocentesis.  Within 4 hours of the thorocentesis, she began to bleed in that pleural space, which caused her lung to collapse and now she has pneumonia.  She is on a ventilator and they are trying daily to take her off of the ventilator, but she isn't taking deep enough breaths to get off of it.  What can be done???  She's been on the ventilator for 7 days!!

HELP!!
