severe rhinitis symptoms that subside with sleep???

by samssf, May 03, 2007 12:00AM
Hi all,

All my life I have had rhinitis and I have seen many doctors. As a child I had rhinitis because of nasal polyps, nasal blockage, deviated septum. I had surgery to correct these items and so now have less symptoms. I have more allergic rhinitis symptoms now that I can breath through my nose... I have been tested and am allergic to many environmental things. however doctors and I are still baffled because:

Whenever I have what seems to be allergic rhintis symptoms (during pollination, etc) almost no medications at all will consistently make me feel better. sometimes a decongestant like Allegra-D will help me feel a lot better, sometimes it will do nothing. I've tried Astilin, Alegra, Claratin, etc etc... nothing works. Also, I have tried staying in doors for several days with the a/c and air purifiers working and still have symptoms. I am not allergic to dust mites though, and I try to keep the house as clean as possible.

However,*usually* if I go to sleep for an hour during the day when I feel horrid, I will wake up feeling much better, and without my runny nose. Sometimes take a med and sleeping will work better... but sleeping always seems to be the key.

I do not have problems with sleep... I sleep very well and usually get 8 hours of sleep. However my whole life the only way I've been able to make my runny nose, itching sensations, and sneezing and watery eyes go away is to sleep for a bit.

Can anyone make a suggestion?

Dear Jenn,
As a parent, what I would do is get my child to National Jewish Medical & Research Center for a thorough evaluation & treatment plan.  No, I receive no compensation from them, but I was an outpatient there in 11/2000 & 12/2000 for 6 days and will go back there as an outpatient again in 5/2002--the service I received there far surpasses anything I received from the 4 lung docs I saw in my hometown & was well worth the journey, trouble & expense.
I know it's probably not really what you wanted to hear & I don't know what technically can be done for your child.  It must be very difficult for you to see her so ill for so long.  I'm sure the LungLine nurse will have some practical suggestions, but it really is difficult for anyone to provide medical care via Forum.
Another option is to try to get your child evaluated & treated at the nearest LARGE medical teaching hospital which has a good lung & gastroenterology department.
Best of luck!  There is more info (if you're interested) in becoming a patient (or having your daughter as a patient) at www.NationalJewish.org; they participate with many insurance plans.
Aloha,
Starion--thriving in HI
