What is the best way to keep a simple cold from turning into reactive airway disease/asthma?

I develop RAD every time I am even challenged by a cold virus, even if I don't get the threatened cold afterall. I live just outside of New Orleans, LA, and this started after Hurricane Katrina.  I came back into my house in early September to pull carpets, clear the refers and get upholstered furniture out (I got 4 inches of water) and within 2 days got a cold that disolved into my first bout with RAD.  I was 56 years old, had never had asthma and only one bout of bronchitis in the early 70s.  I now get this 2 or 3 times a year.  Any one else with similar experience?
