sinus infection leading to respiratory problems

by jacob222, Apr 16, 2008 07:31AM
I am a 49 year old male with a history of 4 years of pain and problems. starting with a recurrent sinus infection that has lasted all this time, treated many times with 10 day augmenting xr, avelox, levaquin, pretty much all the heavy hitters in the anti world that im aware of. The symptoms are cleared for several days then slam me again by the beginning of the next week after finishing antibiotics. Thick mucous seems to run like a river down the back of my throat and into my airways, ENT did nasal surgery for polyops and deviated septum. Helped for a short while and now seems to even get worse. when it starts I can tell its comming. couple of sneezes, stuffy nose, pain in forhead and eyes feel as if they are going to bug right out, Then pain around the top and back of my head, not sever just like tender to the touch, and same in the middle of my back. Almost like a chill, i get a low grade fever, never really goes above 100 degrees chills and as I said a dull aching in the center of my  back, one doc suggested that perhaps I have a sphnoid sinus infection, 10 more days of augmentin xr, the odd thing is after taking this med for as little as 2 days I feel fine, head doesn't hurt back doesn't hurt, {caughing stops for the most part since i am a smoker} little or no face pain and i can feel the junk actually breaking up in my chest and i am able to get rid of it. My question is two fold. If this is a sphenoid sinus infection, will the antibiotics actually kill it if taken for a say six week course, and how should i approach the bronchitis that accompanies this problem, Augmentin is great stuff but, would the infection become resistant to it eventually, thank you in advance for your help, My life is actually beginning to really suck because of this and any help or relief or sugguestions would be so greatly appreciated.

My son is 22 and has chronic sinusitis and has had 3 surgeries - I know how awful it is!! I would post your commnet on the EXPERT forum on this website and maybe get a 2nd ENT opinion. Ask if your problems could be fungal in nature. We just returned from the Mayo clinic and they emphasized using nasal saline rinses - check with your doctor and admitted that once the sinuses get inflamed like this, it can take awhile to clear up. My heart goes out to you - hang in there!!
