sticky mucus in the throat

I am Eelyn from Malaysia, 27 female and am seem to be having this sticky mucus within my throat that i personally feel its dry.. and it cannot be spat out, neither be coughed out. i have been using rhinocort (steroid nasal spray) for sinusitis for 3-4 months, and until lately, i have been experiencing attacks of breathing difficulty..

it seems like my nose and throat airways is narrow, i dont encounter runny nose, but more of dry sticky mucus like feeling, in my nose and throat. And ive been doing the flip turn sinus wash on and off, occassionally, somehow i didnt feel it help much. The mucus still seems to be in my throat. My nose is inflammed as well, even with the steroid spray.. most of the time, i would feel better when i pinched slightly on my nostrils to breathe.

I had acute breathing difficulty attacks few times ; once was after coffee, another was after gym, prednisolone tabs (10mg one shot) & latest one with no apparent reason (morning when i arrive at office). Other than that, i still feel it is bearable..

Been to ENT, he did a scope for my nose, and said cud be due to nasal drip initially (Nov 2010), but he doesnt think that it would cause me such a problem for long term until now.. Therefore, he suspected asthma. And prednisolone would help but i experienced vise versa reaction.. He then didnt know what is wrong with me now.. And prescribe me with decongestant to help in my sinus headache, which is more frequent lately (every weekly; once or twice) Somehow he didnt do any scope for my nose and throat anymore, though during the last few visits, he did mentioned of slight mucus, and it wasnt a very serious condition.

I couldnt be bothered much until lately when i am experiencing the symptoms of breathing difficulty again, and ive seen a chest physician but my lungs were clear accordingly. No X ray was done. And was only given a steroid inhaler+salbutamol inhaler+zyrtec(antihistamine).

What can i do next in order to be free from this problem which bothers my daily activities? I really feel very difficult and am living in fear, after the few attacks again lately..
Pls advise.
Would appreciate very much of advises abroad.
Thanks.

Please to all that read this! I hope I'm evendoing this correctly and you do get to read my comment. I just tried to reply and I didn't see it up so I'll try again.

I have suffered for 3 years with all of these symptoms. I am active and been seen by numerous doctors, had the scopes done, been told all of the same things as yourselves.

After trying everything and anything I went to see a homeopathic doctor that gave me a bottle of Grapefruit Seed Extract ($6) and TruFlora ($40). It seems expensive but I was willing to try anything no matter the cost. I mixed 8 oz of water with about 5 drops of the extract and have been taking the TruFlora daily. After 1 day I saw a huge difference! Its been a week and no more tight chest, difficulty breathing, constant need to clear throat, mucous...nothing!!!
I cannot believe that I had to suffer for 3 years and see countless doctors only to have it cured in a day- no joke.
I've researched for so long and read everyone's posts that have been suffering like I have and I feel it's my duty to share this information with all of you. I truly know what all of you have been going through and I pray that this post will help. Both the Grapefruit Seed Extract and the TruFlora Biocleansing formula were purchased at Down to Earth.  Please try and let me know how it goes. Aloha!

Hi Susie.  A health shop person was telling me about this today as I'd gone in for help (desperation!).  But I thought she said it was grapeseed extract rather than grapefruit.  Can I double check with you what you've been using please?

So thankful that you posted your results!  I have had a problem with mucus every morning for the last year.  Cough and choke to get it up and it was like I was strangling......Been to several doctors with no results.....I read your post and went the next day to the Health Food Co-op.  Bought the Grapefruit Seed Extract and a Probiotic.  Been on them for a little over a week and it really seems to help!  The mucus is coming up a lot easier and I do feel better.  I'm hoping with time this will all clear up.  Thanks again.....:)  I will keep you posted with the results.  Linda

I've had an excess mucus problem since age 27 (I'm now 63!).  I've heard that lots of our physical, and even mental problems could be caused by a lack of sufficient types of enzymes.  Internal inflammation is a condition that seems to be prevalent these days.  Supplemental enzymes are supposed to be of great help for that.

I had actually thought about not enough enzymes being the cause of my problem years ago (I used to live in San Francisco, and all kinds of alternative, holistic therapies were commonly discussed there), but I never made the effort to investigate that possibility or create a plan to pinpoint the problem.  Now here I am many years down the road, still suffering from all the misery of this annoying and exhausting condition.

Anyway, I suspect that I may have used up any store of enzymes that I had when I was younger that prevented a mucus reaction, and that at the age of 27 perhaps my body's store of those particular enzymes were starting to diminish.

I've just recently started reading up on supplemental enzymes (also called systemic oral enzymes) and feel they just might be the remedy for my problem.  There are many different types of enzyme supplements targeted to specific conditions.  Information about them can be found on-line by typing in "systemic oral enzymes" or "supplemental food enzymes" in Google to find places that sell them and books about them.  I'm getting mine from a nearby health food store.  I just started taking them last week.

Also, about two months ago (Sept. 13th, 2011) I started using a food journal (something I've never done before), writing down everything I eat, and measuring and weighing everything.  My food journal gives a column for: calories, total fat (I also keep track of saturated fat), carbs, protein, cholesterol, sodium and fiber.  Various types of these journals can be found by typing in "food journal" or "diet journal" in Google.  And calories and other food values for thousands of different foods can be found by typing in "calories in foods" or similar.  Plus for specific items commercial products, I just transfer those 7 categories from right off the "Nutrition Facts" label printed on the product package.

I also started a separate notebook where I create a separate page for each new food item I eat (example: 1 hardboiled egg: calories 70; total fat 4g; saturated fat 1g; carbs 0g; protein 6g; cholesterol 170mg; sodium 65mg; fiber 0g.  To help me locate the food items easily in this notebook, I started an index on the last page of the notebook, assigning each food item a page number.  Example: hard boiled egg is page #70.  So far I'm up to 137 different food items.  It's now very easy to record everything daily (actually I like to do it after each meal, so I don't forget what I ate).

What I've found is that I was WAY UNDERESTIMATING the number of calories, sodium, cholesterol, carbs and fat, and WAY OVERESTIMATING the amount of protein and fiber I was eating.

By keeping track of all this, and by taking the supplemental enzymes, I'm trying to pinpoint the foods that may be the cause of my excess mucus problem, and I also need to lose weight.  Since starting my food journal, I've lost 15 pounds (and have quite a few more to lose), have stopped eating all the junk food, and feel much better.  But I still have the mucus problem.

I think it may be caused by one or several different kinds of foods that I like and continue to eat, because generally these foods are nutritious  - dairy (non-fat milk, sharp cheddar cheese, non-fat cottage cheese, non-fat yogurt), and also wheat products like flaxseed bread made with whole wheat.  I'm hoping that the enzymes I'm starting to take will counteract the detrimental effects these food items may be having on my system, and that the enzymes will start allowing my body to absorb the nutrients from them like it should - but probably isn't now.

So my bottom line is:  As an alternative to prescription drugs, and to just generally improve my health naturally, I'm giving supplemental/systemic oral enzymes a try, and I hope they help.  I purchased a book about enzymes at a nearby health food store, along with a couple of enzyme supplements that the owner helped me choose.  I'll report back as I continue with my experiment.

Eelyn:  I have just been diagnosed with laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR), and my main symptom was bouts of thick mucous in my throat, unable to clear, feeling of a gob of stuff in my throat kinda choking me.  ENT doctor ordered a swallowing study, which showed this disorder.  LPR is sometimes mistakenly misdiagnosed as post-nasal drip.  I have never felt that I had reflux (heartburn), but this is the stomach acid coming up your esophagus and pooling in the larynx/pharynx and burning, leading to possible scarring.  Maybe this is your problem too.  Look it up on the internet and maybe seek ear-nose-throat evaluation.    - Elaine
