turbinectomy or turbinoplasty

by jonathan c, Mar 17, 2006 12:00AM
I have been talking with an Otolaryngologist/ENT about the possibility of my mysterious turbinate swelling and if its causing my constant dull headache in my forehead and more.   He says there is surgical removal of turbinates, or there is a turbinoplasty which is quicker and easier.

But if I'm having true nasal headaches, is it likely the inferior, middle, or the other set that is causing the pain? Because I think the doc said the Plasty was only to remove the first set of turbinates... they are all swolen up upon visual inspection and my nose is constantly blocked no matter what environment I am in.     Sinus/maxilofascial CT reveals crystal clear sinuses and nasal steroids have had absolutely no effect.

thank you..

Since you are having a headache then a nasal cause is unlikely.  If nasal obstruction or congestion is the major issue then inferior turbinate reduction procedures can help.  Generally speaking the other turbinates should not be touched.  Resection or removal of turbinates is to be avoided.
