what does this mean????

i had a CT scan done and this was the results:

there are diffuse ground-glass opacities present throughout the lungs that are most prevalent at the upper lobes and within the right lung. there are no masses or nodules related to these opacities. no definate bulky edenopathy is seen within the mediastinum or hila. apperent fullness of the hilar areas is felt to be due to a prominence of the central pulmanary arteries. there is no pleural effusion. the heart and great vessels are unremarkable in apperance. there is no bulky mass seen within the region of the adrenal glands. the spleen in incompletely sampled but appears to be minamally to mildly enlarged.

then it says Impressions:
ground glass opacities on the regular and high resolution CT scan of the thorax. differential considerations include: allergic hypersensitivity, all forms of acute interstitual disease, PCP. clinical and laboratory correlations are recommended to help arrive at a definitive diagnosis.

i went to the doctor due to a cough that started all this testing.
I had a chest x-ray that made them want to take this CT scan
I also had to get a bunch of blood test, i get the results in a few days

was just wondering what i have or might have??

i did have coughing, but the doc put me on advain, the minimal dosage and it seems to work very well, clearing up my cough and my lungs.

as of now i hardley cough anymore, only a few times a day.

I am 27 years old, quite smoking 4 years ago.

well went to the doctors this morning, had another set of chest x-rays done, and he said that they actually improved a tiny bit, gave me the spirometer test listened to my lungs ect, lungs were clear as they were last time, and my spirometer i blew a 600, so basically he said that this will be something that we will have to moniter closely, so my next appointment is in 6 months, he stated that it might have been a acute viral sickness, but we are still not sure, anyhow things are looking up in a sense since the chest x-rays did not get worse, could the cloudiness in my lungs be from inhalation of drywall and sanding of the drywall?, i did not wear a mask at all and i did it for 3 days sanding the compound on the drywall, and i remember i could hardly see from all the dust in the air from sanding, anyhow, things are on the good side for now, and hopefully will stay there, the pulmonolgy doctor told to monitor myself closley but optimistically, thanks to all who responded from my question.

Hello...you've had quite a course of treatment. I hope you feel a little better after seeing a pulmonologist. It sounds like all your lab findings are relatively normal. The oxygen saturation level, when he put that clip on your finger, is actually kind of low. 94% for a 27 year old is on the lower side of good. A 91%, even though after exertion, is low. But everything else, it sounds, was OK i.e. blood gas and pulmonary function tests. I'm curious to know what your next x-ray shows. If it still has the appearence it had close to three weeks ago. Was your cough a dry cough? Any phlegm? And as for living in Pennsylvania, that would have no effect on your oxygen levels. Good luck and look forward to hearing from you soon.

i recieved my pulmonary function test and they came back well within the normal range, and also my blood gas was well in the normal range, the only thing he said that was off was my diffuse capacity but it was only a little off, so he decided to cancel the open lung biopsy becuase he doest understand how my x-rays and chest ct scans were so bad looking, but why my function tests are so good. so it has him a little stumped, i do remember though at the time of the chest x-rays and the ct scan i was filled with flem becuase i was coughping a lot of it up, could this have swayed him in another direction?, anyhow i am getting a repeat x-ray to see if there are any changes.

Thanks Doctor

I recently went to a pulmonologist , he did a spirometer, and he also put a clip on my finger it read a 94, then he made me walk up a big hill with it on and at one point it read a 91, and the other test that measures your forced air in one second (said i had a normal value), he looked at my cat scans and stated that i have scarring in my lungs and said i have interstitial disease, then he said that he wants to do a open lung biopsy, shouldnt he first do other test before jumping straight to the open lung biopsy??, i havnt even got pulmonary function test yet?, what do you think, thanks in advance.

Ground glass is a descriptive term for shadows seen on X-ray and CT scans of the chest.  It is not specific for any diagnosis and could be any one of those listed below, under Impressions.  This appearance can be seen with allergic, non-allergic, infectious and non-infectious diseases.  Some of these may require treatment, while others may resolve spontaneously.

If the shadows persist, either on chest X-ray or CT scan, a biopsy will be necessary to establish a diagnosis.
