My daughter had what was supposed to be a straight forward repair of a broken nose from being elbowed in a cheerleading stunt. She required surgery due to extended and severe nosebleeds. There was no outward sign of a break, cosmetically speaking. Well, it was a miserable experience for her and took her weeks more than we were told for her to be back to all activities.
Now she has a huge lump in the middle of her nose with many symptoms sounding like a prize fighter...dripping, recurrent infections, and her previous little nose is ruined. I took her to a second surgeon (would not go back to the one that did that to her), and he said that she has a "boxer's break" now and that there is missing cartilage in the bottom of her nose. I do not think he wanted to take the problem on as he explained that it is much more difficult to build up the nose than to take away from it. Harder for who? surgeon? daughter?
How difficult would this be to fix? Where would the needed cartilage come from? Will her nose continue to get flatter and flatter as time goes on. is there a good chance that she could end up with even more damage like she did the last time? Would I need a certain kind of plastic surgeon (like one that does mostly reconstructive)? My daughter is afraid after the last "repair" and so is putting it off; however when it is affecting her the way it does, I told her that she should have it fixed while she can still use our insurancr to do it and while we can still prove that it is not cosmetic, but from injury.
