Chlamydia and gonorrhea

Almost three weeks after my unprotected vaginal exposure I went to see my obgyn. They ran bloodwork for hep b and c and vdrl. He did a swab for chlamydia and gonorrhea. I was at the very end of my period and there was some blood on the swab. My Dr. has been an obgyn for 29 years so I do trust him, but I asked for copies of the reports and the quest report says since there was blood there could be a chance of a false negative. When I called the Drs. office the nurse said my results were negative. I am just not sure where to go from here. I have since been on an antibiotic for 10 days for sinus/strep infection. Any thoughts on the conclusiveness of my tests?

I decided to take your advice and made an appt. for Monday to have all the tests run again, I  figure there is no harm in doing this. It will give me some reassurance. Thank you very much.

A bloody specimen can affect the enzyme test for Chlamdia called the ELISA test. That is why I recommended retesting. Your GYN may not have seen this problem, but we used to see it quite often. That is why we discontined testing with the ELISA method some years ago. Take care.

Grace....thanks a million. I spoke with my obgyn and he said that in his 29 years of practice he has never seen a negative test then come back positive becasue of blood on the swab. He said that Quest has to say this to cover their bums. he said no worries and that I can sleep easy. I do trust him so i feel a better. I had a cheating bf so i have just been full of anxiety over every std you can imagine.

depends on the antibiotics.

give your provider a call and discuss your concerns. odds are you really don't need repeat testing but discuss it with them.

Ok..I will do that. I am on antibiotics right now, could it have already taken care of the infection?

I would recommend a first morning specimen Urine NAAT. This should answer your question. Please ask your doctor to send you for this test.
