Not Herpes? than what?

Hello! My name is Ajay. My husband is 29, in relatively good health and we have been in a monogomous marriage for over 7 years. Infidelity is not a relevant nor even pondered answer to my question.
In June, my husband had a small red bump appear on his bottom lip. By that, I mean, it looked like someone took a red ink pen and literally just made one pen sized mark on his lip. after a few weeks, it started to hurt him. My mother, who is a nurse, suggested the possibility that it could be a long time dormant case of herpes and to try to put some abreva on his lip. After 5 days of applying abreva, his lip broke out into a full blown cluster of tiny blisters. We were baffled!! it was almost like that abreva made it worse.
Anyways, a few weeks later, the same cycle occured on his penis, started as a small dot and proceeded to  break out. At this point, it only seemed logical that because of the visual appearance of the breakouts, and the placements that it had to be herpes. HOWEVER, hes been repeatedly going to see a dermatologist who isnt exactly "thorough" or "explanative" in his thoughts and has continued to leave my husban hanging. The doctor presribed his acyclovir, which seemed to help, however, as soon as his doses were finished, it broke out again! this started in early june and hes still broken out in mid september. thats 3 months! he then had a culture done a few weeks ago, went to the derm doctor tuesday and they still did not explain the results of the culture...instead they wrote him a script for cipro and acyclovir. his penis is now very broke out and is causing him a lot of pain. his lip has also broken out even worse. ive extensively researched the breakout time and so forth on herpes and its not mentioned that it lasts anywhere CLOSE to 3 months! especially being on both medications and still not improving. Im at a loss, and though I know you all are not doctors, I come to your forums all the time and realize that you all are very intelligent and i am hoping you can answer me this.
If its not herpes, is it possible, or even coincidental that there could be another type of skin disorder/infection that has only occured on his lip and penis?
Please give me any related feedback...we are desperate for answers at this point!

Thank You!
AJay

Get a copy of his records from this dermatologist and find a different one.  Be sure to write down all your questions to take with you to the new dermatologist.  Taking a copy of his records means that they won't waste time and money repeating the same tests over and over again.

I can't help you with what it is since you didn't mention if he's had any herpes blood tests and what their results are or if there's been any lesion cultures and/or bacterial cultures done.  I do think that it's time for a 2nd opinion though. Sounds like this doc is just throwing things at him to see if anything works which obviously isn't working :(

Sorry that you two are going through this. It is strange that his doctor does not have an answer. I would suggest he get a swab test, this from my understanding, is the most accurate test for herpes. It is possible it is herpes, but it sounds like it could be something else too. It is time for him to go to a regular doctor or clinic that can test for herpes, especially if he is in pain. Could it be shingles or something similar and are you having any symptoms? Hope it all works out.
