Tetracycline STD?

Hi doctors,

Just a quick question to put my mind at ease.

According to most websites tetracycline is part of the penicillin family and is also used gonorrhoea, syphilis and chlamydia. I just wanted to check this is true?

Partly right.  The penicillins and tetracyclines are entirely different antibiotic classes.  But the tetracyclines (usually doxycycline) indeed are commonly used for some STDs like chlamydia, NGU, and as back-up for syphilis treatment in persons allergic to penicillin. But never as the only drug for gonorrhea, which often is resistant to the tetracyclines.
