Two years without noticing?

Two years ago, my husband had an affair. He says he never used a condom. The husband of the other woman contacted me and informed me of the affair. When I asked about any infection, he said they have been monogamous since 2004 and there is no chance of an STI. Obviously my husband and I worked things out. Being naive, I believed that both were clean and was never tested for any type of infection.

All my pap smears came back normal. My husband was in the Army  and  got back from Iraq this past January. About a week after he got home, sex became painful and I noticed some itching. Believing it was my birth control, I switched to a different method. Nonetheless, I went to a doctor where I was tested for chlamydia, the results came back negative. I am not sure if I was tested for gonorrhea, but I believe I was since they usually test those two together. I was also treated for  UTI and the problem continued. I was foolish and believed I had reoccurring yeast infections . I started to consume more yogurt and used over the counter yeast infection remedies.

I am now 8 weeks pregnant and was experiencing severe abdominal cramping, a higher fever, and heavy cottage cheese discharge. That was along with extreme nausea, but with a pregnancy, that is to be expected. Since my obstetrician does not want to see me until I am 10-12 weeks, I went to an urgent care center. I was tested for both chlamydia and gonorrhea. Today, I received a phone call, telling me I have gonorrhea.

My husband insists he has not cheated since the affair. However, I do not believe him since he specially could not go two years without noticing symptoms of gonorrhea. I probably could, but that seems unlikely. After my very long story, my question is this: could either of us have possibly gone two years without noticing we had gonorrhea? I am going to say "ha-ha-ha...no", but I figured there is no harm in asking.

Sorry, I ramble.

pregnancy can cause false positives with gonorrhea. best to treat though since you are pregnant and you certainly were symptomatic for something.  Ideally call your obgyn and see if you can be seen monday for further exam too.

odds are neither of you have been tested for herpes either. you should cover that base with a type specific herpes igg blood test since you are pregnant and so should your spouse.  he also should have a full std screening done too while he is at it. he also needs treated for gonorrhea.

could your husband be lying? yes he could be. could he have had gonorrhea for 2 year and just now passed it to you?  doubtful.  your pap test most likely would've picked up on gonorrhea if you had had it for 2 years.  no clear answers I know but at this point concentrate on you and your pregnancy and get further follow up monday with your obgyn.

gonorrhea is treated with IM ceftriaxone, not penicillin. please make sure that he had the proper antibiotics given.

I suspect that my husband is lying. I do not want to believe it, but it would only make sense. I did not know what a pregnancy could lead to a false positive for gonorrhea. That seems like a distinct possibility since my husband has yet to experience any symptoms--frequent and painful urination, ect. Or so he has said, but if he has noticed, no one in the right mind would not tell the other infected partner just so they could keep getting infected. I also have not noticed any discharge on the tip of his penis. I took some antibiotics today and my husband did not get tested, but received a shot of penicillin.

Thank you so much for the post. I will get tested for some more things and will make an appointment with my primary care physician ASAP just so see what he says.
