Why isn't HSV1 an STD?
Since I contracted genital HSV1 from my boyfriend who has oral HSV1...should I then say I contracted an STD from someone who doesn't have an STD? I don't understand since he gave me genital HSV1 with a cold sore via oral sex, then why doesn't he have an STD? I find this all too confusing!

This discussion is related to hsv 1 concern.

HSV1 is commonly found orally and less commonly gentialy. Since HSV1 is passed most of the time by kissing and over 60% of the population has it, it is not considered a STD.

You can post over in the herpes community for more info.

Okay...then I guess I don't have an std either? This is really confusing...I thought the only way to get an STD was from someone who had an STD! And I did ask my boyfriend before we were intimate if he has any STD's and he told me "NO"...

So, I guess he answered truthfully...but he still gave me an STD...

I got an STD from someone who doesn't have an STD then???

First time for everything! lol

Dr. Hunter Hansfield says differently on this message board.

He says that HSV1 orally IS considered to be an STD if someone transmits herpes via oral sex (mouth to genitals).

Ok then he says it's an STD. I don't see what your really getting at with all of this is it a STD or is it not a STD.

If you just have hsv1 orally - you don't have a std.  when grammy kisses you as an infact with a cold sore on her mouth and gives you hsv1 orally, that is not a sexually transmitted infection.  Kisses are not sex.

If you've contracted hsv1 in the genital area from oral sex, then you do have a SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED INFECTION because it's an infection you got from a sexual contact.

If you are someone who has hsv1 genitally then yes indeed you do have a std/sti. make sense?
