how could i get trichomoniasis???

I was tested in aug for all std's and came back clean, however I did have bacterial vaginosis wich I got treated for with flagil. A couple weeks ago after being with only one person I started having vaginal discomfort and itching and yeast infection treatments did not help so I went to the dr. And got diagnosed with trichomoniasis. Obviously I did not have this in auugust and even if I did the flagil antibiotics I took would have killed it. So I had my partner get tested and he came back negative. So, after I was treated we had sex, with a condom, but his penis did briefly brush against my vagina. Well now I am having the same symptoms as before. Would it be possible he actually does have it and tested negative and gave it to me again thru this brief contact or even having sex with a condom????

To clarify to you and to Vance I said you can't (cannot) get Trichomonas by any other way other than sexual means. Someone was saying you can get it by a hot tub and I was saying no you cannot. That is my opinion (I'm a clinical microbiologist)  and the opinion of the Centers for Disease and Prevention (CDC) and  the general opinion of doctors. So you are right in your answer. I am just clarifying that you can't get it another way.

Vance2335,
I wasn't the one that said you could get Trich by non sexual means. I said you can only get it by sexual means. Someone else said that.
thx,

It is the opinion of many Dr's

That may be your opinion.. However, I'd rather listen to my doctor. I do believe that sex is the only actual way to get it. But there may still be other ways.

I have to disagree with you that it is possible to get Trich by non-sexual means.

FYI, sorry you can't get Trich by a hot tub or other than sex. A lot of people say this. It is simply not so. It is convenient to believe these things. It is not scientifically true.

Sounds like your guy infected you sweet heart. My doctor told me I was never tested for it until I came in with a discharge. But in your case since you were tested for it months before, it does sound like he passed it along to you.

And some doctors don't test for Trich unless you have the symptoms. They mainly test for the common stds. I got tested for stds at my routine visit and everything came back fine. I didn't find out I had Trich until 4 months went by because I started getting symptoms which were brought out by a bad yeast infection and in my case, I cheated. Believe real experiences, not the internet.

I was told (by my doctor) that men cannot be tested for Trich. I'm not really familiar with this conversation however sex is not the only way to contract this STD. Hot tubs, toilets, etc. Although it is very rare, it can be contracted in more ways than just sex.

You can carry Trich asymptomatically for years actually.  But then the fact that you did have symptoms can happen. You can harbor it for a long time either one of you. But usually when you harbor it with no symptoms you don't generally get symptom you generally just find out by chance that you have it. So you may have acquired it from him. Since the antibiotics are still working it probably isn't a resistant strain either. If you both get treated at the same time then it should clear things up. But do keep in mind either person can be asymptomatic for years. So, if either of you came into the relationship with it and didn't know you had it and one of you gave it to the other that could have happened. That is why some people think their husband is cheating because they can carry it themselves for a couple of years (even women) and say they are only married for a year or two but then they test themselves and come up positive for trich then they think their boyfriend or husband is cheating when in fact they were carrying it all that time. Yes it can happen. In you case, since you cleared it up like that something seems to have happened in the process. So, hopefully this will clear it I up. Hope this makes sense.

Also, my dr. Told me that I was tested in august for trich and even if it was a false negative the antibiotics would have killed it that I took back then. The fact that I had a reaction twice right after having sex with this guy tells me it was him. I mean how could I have it for that long and not show any symptoms till 6 months later? If someone is going to show symptoms at all it'll be 5-28 days after contracting it from my research....

Thank you everyone for the advice! I called my dr. And since it had been so recent that I had taken the antibiotics I told them my partner tested negative so I slept with him again and was having the same symptoms so the just called in the prescription for me and it cleared up right after taking it! It also cleared up right after taking it the first time so for it to come back a week after sleeping with him again the only logical explanation is that he had it it right? Even though we did use a condom something there re-infected me. He took antibiotics too so hopefully this won't be an issue anymore!

Also, if I had a strain that were resistant, I would not have just retested negative after taking the flagyl.

The fact is, no matter how many facts anyone presents, no doctor can tell me what my husband or I have done. We know that we have not done anything...either one of us.

So no medical website or expert can take the truth away from us.

No, my husband and I have been using condoms for the past 3 years because we did not have health insurance. So it isvery possible for me to have gotten it a different way and for him to have not gotten the infection.

Secondly, he did not cheat on me and I
did not cheat on him so no facts on any
website can change that.

Thirdly he did use his first morning urine.

Fourthly if you do some searching you
will find tons of ppl online with the same
experience. One such person's husband
did cheat, but both he and his mistress
tested negative for trich and the wife who
did not cheat was positive.

Finally, I did not say she should douche. I said she should make sure she is using a ph balanced soap. The soap I was using before had a very high ph. They make ph balanced soaps especially for women like Summer's Eve.

There is nothing wrong with eating yogurt and taking probiotics and that is absolutely incorrect, probiotics improve your vaginal health as well. This is why they recommend yogurt for various vaginal infections. It does not take the place of flagyl, but it does give you certain probiotic organisms like lactobillus which has been demonstrated, but not proven, to fight trich. It certainly is better than sitting around with a barren vagina after takinh antibiotics.

Firstly, the way your describing your infection with T. vaginalis sounds like you may have a strain that is resistant to Flagyl.  There is about 5% resistance to it and it has been shown to be increasing. They may to treat you with a higher dose of Flagyl or another drug. There is one other they are trying. So, you still should get retested. If you had it your husband would have gotten it. So, like I said he might want to get retested depending on the method they used.
As to the other comments on here. No, you can only get it by sex. Read the CDC website www.cdc.gov that will explain a lot to you. Lastly, regarding douching or washing your vagina with soup is a really bad idea. It will disturb the Ph of the vagina and despite taking probiotics and eating yogurt this usually doesn't work very well except for the intestines. You can do that but you are setting yourself up to have bacterial vaginosis again. I wouldn't risk it. Hope this helps.

I would recommend you wash your vagina with a ph balanced soap and dry it completely after washing. Take probiotics and eat yogurt. Clean and dry all towels and do not share towels with anyone. Do not leave the area wet for too long.

Again I do not care what anyone says. I know my situation.

Also my doctor also stated that it can be contracted by other means but that it is rare. There are so many ppl in this situation that I think that it is not all that rare.

While I appreciate the help ppl have given me here, I know that you can get trich by nonsexual means because I had it and my husband tested negative. I got his paper from the dr in the mail. I know for a fact that he tested on first morning urine. We went to the dr and he was in pain from holding his pee for so long. I am very fortunate that my husband trusts me because I think that if I would have been married to anyone else I would have been falsely accused.

My test was accurate because the first time it tested positive. I took the medicine in a one time dose. I retested about two days later. I tested completely negative.

To add to this you can only get Trichomonas via sex. But, what test did they use a wet mount or PCR? if they used a wet mount they can have false positives and false negatives. Usually, false negatives are more common. PCR is very sensitive and specific. Also, if your partner didn't collect the urine right (first urine in the morning). There is some chance of error here. If you can find out what type of procedure the lab used that would explain more.  The method of acquiring it isn't likely if at all. Nevertheless, you need to get retreated or rechecked and he should get rechecked.

Trich is difficult to screen for in men, so it's possible he did have it. But the contact you had with him I doubt this would lead to transmission.

Follow up with your Dr.

Also Trich is not commonly tested for, so not sure if you were tested for it in August.

Sorry you are wrong.  Trich is easy sensitive test my urine , or urethral swab by molecular tests. I developed the Gen-Probe assay myself.
