Adverse effects of non-condom use with partner after diagnosis of HPV

My girlfriend was informed after her abnormal Pap that she has HPV.  The doctor informed her to use condoms from now on, even with me, althogh we have been together for a few years.  My question is, are there any medical reasons why not wearing protection during intercourse can effect the HPV in any way.  Will it make it worse by not wearing protection?

Her doctor is wrong.  You have already been exposed and undoubtedly infected with the HPV strain(s) your partner is carrying; in fact, you could have been the source of her infection.  Using condoms in your relationship with the same partner is like closing the barn door after the horse is not only out, but well beyond the horizon.  Neither your health nor hers will be affected by condom use at this point.  Don't let HPV rule this aspect of your life; in the long run, it's probably going to turn out to be no big deal, even for your partner.

Good luck--  HHH, MD

I think the reason the doc wants you to wear a condom is so that you reduce the chance of contracting it yourself.

I think the doctor will tell you that you undoubtedly were already infected with the same HPV your girlfriend has and that it is just as likely that she got it from you as it is the other way around.  No condoms are necessary.  It can't be passed back and forth.  You either have it or you don't and once you have it you can't get the same strain again.  I work at an ambulatory surgery center where we perform procedures to remove HPV and our doctors also tell this condom business to patients.  When I hear it I usually refer the patients to this site.  There is ALOT of misinformation floating around even with doctors who should know better.
