Hi Doc. I've been suffering so much lately with worry about hiv possibility. 3 weeks ago, i believe i was the victum of the date rape drug. I woke up after a night out in hong Kong with a sex worker in my room. We clearly had unprotected vaginal sex and i'm so worried i've exposed myself to hiv. She left immediately when i woke up and now i'd wished i'd asked her about her sex health. Since then i've gone to my gp and told him the story. I had blood taken for tests and will recieve the results wednesday. I've a girlfriend whom i love with all my heart and between the worry and guilt i don't know how i'll cope. Even if the tests are negative, i've got to wait another 12 weeks. Please advise me about how accurate the test is after 2-3 weeks and i have no symptoms apart from being sick in my stomach. Thanks doc.

I am sorry to hear of your situation but you have posted on the wrong site.   Questions about HIV belong on the HIV prevention site.  I will do my best to answer your questions with this reply but, if you have additional questions or follow-up they must be on the HIV Prevention site.  Sorry.

Your risk for HIV from the single exposure you describe is low.  For starters, chances are that your partner did not have HIV.  Secondly, even if she did, your risk for infection is low.  Only 1 in 1000 vaginal sexual exposures with infected partners results in HIV transmission.  Your 3 week test result will provide further useful information as at that time close to 90% of infections acquired 3 weeks earlier will be detectable.  You do not need to wait for 12 weeks to get a definitive answer, a repeat test at 8 weeks would capture any remaining infections.

I hope this helps. Try not to worry.  EWH
