Am I Having An Outbreak? Question About Herpes Bumps / Lesions

How much variation is there in the size of herpes bumps / lesions? I have a cluster of very small (pinhead-sized) bumps on the inside of my lip near the right edge of my lips. Both sides of my mouth are also a little inflamed. I know I have HSV-1, I'm just curious as to whether these bumps + the inflammation constitute an actual outbreak or whether they're something else. Not sure whether I should be kissing right now.

PCR swab would be the best way to know if you're actively shedding the virus.  Culture is not really reliable.

I've heard grace talk about taking several swabs over a period of time, possibly she will elaborate on that.

It's just that it's very difficult for me to know how to be responsible with this virus when I don't even know what my outbreaks look like. My doctors say it's "common sense" not to kiss with an open lesion, but what if the most I'll get with my herpes are these tiny bumps? What if they're contagious? I guess I should get a culture done?
