Anal Warts

Hi Doctor,

This is related to my previous question. A biopsy identified I have anal warts caused by a virus (koilocytosis it says) - sorry it this is obvious... They are external and kind of look like cauliflowers but there´s only two and they do not itch or hurt or produce any secretion and there are other very small ones at the inner side as well (4 in total).

Is there any chance the virus is not HPV? I thought not after googling some stuff, but I´ve heard from a Doctor today that it may be another type of virus or even if it´s HPV it may be a type not related to STDs. The Doctor said he´ll extract the warts and send them for analysis to identify the virus.

For a moment, I had the impression he was just trying to say something nice because I was nervous... This is being a nightmare to me due to the quick conclusions people make with this sort of stuff.

Hi Doctor,

I finally got the result of the analysis and it says "fibroepithelial polyp". I´m going to see my Dr next Friday but now I´m curious... Does this indicate I didn´t have HPV?

Dr. Handsfield and I share the forum.  You got me this time.  FYI, the reason we share the forum is because we have worked together for nearly 30 years and while our verbiage styles vary, we have never disagreed on management strategies or advice to clients. You should have written this questions as a follow-up to your earlier question (which I just read).  It would have saved you the cost of another question.  On to your questions:

What you sound like certainly sounds an awful lot like warts and koilocytosis is one of the findings classically associated with HPV infection.  Thus, it is far, far more likely that what you describe are warts than anything else.  Could they be, perhaps but I would think that it would be most rare and not something that I have encountered in years of practice and consultation.  I am betting that the analysis shows that this is HPV.  Please let me know if it is not, you will teach me something.

As Dr. Handsfield said, don't let worrying about this get to you.  This is your business, no one else’s and your doctor will respect your confidentiality.  Take care EWH
