Anxious and Scared

Dr.
On January 18th, I went to a strip club.  I remained clothed the entire time, she dance for me for about 2 hours.
I sucked her breasts and at the end of the night she leaned over and kissed me.  Closed mouth, lip to lip for about 5-10 seconds.

I felt horrible about the incident, as I'm married with 3 kids.

6 days later the left side of my face went numb, it started on my lip and moved to my cheek.  It tingled slightly but mostly numb.  I freaked and called my friend who is an ER Dr.  He said it could be lots of things but it sounded like a prodrome to Herpes.

I went to my PCP the next day.  She told me you can't get HSV-2 through the contact I had and I shouldn't worry.
She gave me 1 dose of Valtrex, take 2 pills in the morning and 2 12 hours later because she thought I might be having a Zoster outbreak or bell's palsy.

My face has stayed numb for the last 9 weeks.

My 2 week and 6 week test both said the same thing

HSV-1 positive
HSV-2 Negative

My questions:
1. I've read that inital outbreaks of HSV-2 have flu-like symptoms and that prodromes are for recurrent outbreaks.
Since I know I didn't have HSV-2 before this incident could this be hsv-2 from a kiss?  Would my initial outbreak have a prodrome?

2. My prodrome has stayed for 9 weeks, I've read they only last 2 hours to 2 days, could the Valtrex have caused this? Interrupted the nerve or something, have you heard of this?

3. I never had an outbreak, I've been told by some that even with Valtrex I should have had an outbreak if it was Hsv-2.

4. I haven't kissed my kids in 10 weeks, I'm scared to death, I see symptoms on them all the time, today my daughter said she felt that she had something in her eye and I immediately thought ocular herpes.  What are the odds I've given something to the kids, I've been kissing their heads.

I've read you say that 1 time exposure with a negative 6 week test is 1 in a million chance, plus I think oral to oral is much more rare?  Do you think his is hsv-2?  I've never had symptoms, blisters etc,

Should I get tested at 12 weeks, 16 weeks, 6 months?  My PCP said she's 99.9% I don't have it, my ER dock friend who doesn't seem to know much about herpes doesn't think so either?

I really trust your opinion and appreciate your help

Kissing doesn't transmit HSV-2.  Could it theoretically happen?  Yes.  But no STD professional has ever seen or heard of such a case.

Let HSV go, both 1 and 2.  It's not the issue.

I deleted your new thread. The additional comments should have been posted here.

The additional information doesn't change my previous opinion or advice.

You said "I want to put this behind me, I know my chances of having it are slim to none, but it would make me rest easier knowing some other info."  As someone with OCD, you probably know that no matter what I say, it will not completely calm your fears.  There is always a "yes but" or "what if" issue; that's what OCD is all about.  Responding to your specific questions will only reinforce that abnormal psychology. Call it tough love, but that's the way it is.

You may not post any more comments or any new threads in either this or the HIV prevention forum, for at least 6 months (per standard MedHelp rules).  If you do, you will be banned from posting anything at all on any MedHelp forum.  Good bye.

None of that makes any difference.

I'm not surprised to hear you have OCD, given the tone and style of your questions. But you may not keep coming back with every additional "yes but" or "what if" question comes to mind.  I will have no further comments or advice.

Dr.

I do appreciate you comments and as you can tell I have OCD and Anxiety disorder.
If you could just finish up with me by answering the question above

1. Would initial onset have been a prodrome or would it have been flu-like symptoms?
2. Is it possible Valtrex can elongate a prodrome for 2 days to 2 months? Have you ever heard of this?
3. I think I sipped from her glass and shared a cigarette with her too? Any change?

I know you say it's impossible and I appreciate that, I'm just wondering if my symptoms look like Oral HSV-2, in case I didn't tell you something about the incident.

I worry so much about my family, I don't want to annoy you I just want to be %100 sure.

Thanks again.

You've never heard of Valtrex elongating a prodrome, I have a feeling my face is an anxiety issue, but if it's not hsv-2 I want to narrow down the option.

Anything from here, I'll post anew

I think her bottoms did come off a time or two? She would have rubbed my pants with her Vagina? That's all I can think of for genital contact.

last comment.

Sorry.

I've read a blog and had another Dr. tell me that oral HSV-2 transmission is possible, are you saying it isn't? Kiss to kiss.

Also I'm not worried about the HSV-1 I've proably had for a long time

I only took Valtrex for 1 day....you don't think this "tied" up my nerve, what started as a prodrome just stayed as a nerve damage?

I'm sorry to pester you, I've been in such pain for 10 weeks, this is good to hear.  I really trust your judgement.

What about the initial symptoms, they would have been like the flu right?

Thanks again,
J.

Reacting only to the opening paragraph, before I read the rest of your question:  It is not possible you acquired an STD during the events you describe.  Whatever symptoms or other problems you describe in the rest of your message, they are not due to an STD acquired in the strip club.  Conceivably you could have been infected with HSV-1, which is transmitted by kissing -- but oral herpes in that situation wouldn't be considered an STD, and in any case could have been caught from any number of other day to day non-intimate personal exposures.

Now I have read the rest.  Guess what?  I agree completely with your PCP.  I cannot say what is causing your apparent neurological problem, but I believe it is merely a coincidence with respect to your strip club adventure.  Bell's palsey or herpes zoster indeed seem more likely than an HSV infection.  Your positive HSV-1 test at 2 weeks might be due to a new infection, but that's a bit early for the test to be positive.  Therefore, that result is evidence against HSV-1 as the cause; more likely you have been infected for a long time, like 50% of the population.

To your specific questions:

1) HSV-2 is not a consideration.  HSV-2 is acquired only from another person's genitals or anal area.

2) Your symptoms are not an HSV prodome, which generally lasts only 2-3 days before overt herpes lesions appear.

3) If you had either HSV-1 or HSV-2, Valtrex could completely prevent an outbreak, but only when taking the drug or for a few days afterward.  I can't tell if you're still taking it.  If so, you should ask your PCP whether it is time to stop.  If it was going to help the neurological problem, it would have been effective by now.

4) I see no reason not to kiss your kids.  Even if all the probabilities turn out wrong and you have HSV-1, probably you are not infectious.  You should ask the same question of your PCP, but I'll be she agrees with me on this.

There is no point in further HSV blood tests.  It is simply impossible that your symptoms are due to HSV-2, and that part of the test will remain negative.  The HSV-1 result is going to be positive for life.  But again, also discuss this with your PCP.

You need to put HSV-2 (and probably HSV-1) out of your mind.  Something else is going on.  None of this has anything whatsoever to do with the strip club event.

I hope this helps.  Best wishes-- HHH, MD

Drs.
I forgot to mention that during the strip club time, I did give her a shoulder rug, so I was rubbing her back etc and neck and she probably sucked my ears....

If this changes anything I don't know.
