But we both got tested

by unbelievable092507, Sep 25, 2007 07:46PM
So here's my situation.

Only had 2 partners before my current partner, and never showed any signs of having any type of infection. My current partner had several partners before me. We have been dating and monogamous for the past 8 months.

I got tested for herpes before meeting my current partner (negative results) and this past june. The doctor told me I was "squeaky clean". My partner has also been tested, most recently in june 2007 as well. We use condoms 95% of the time.

Had unprotected sex with him last week and the next day began to notice slight vaginal swelling. Today (5 days after unprotected sex) I went to the doctor because of a slight vaginal pain and he informed me that I probably have herpes. I am waiting for the culture results.

How is it possible that one of us could have transmitted herpes after being tested for it multiple times? Can blood tests really be that inaccurate?

My partner has no visible symptoms. Is it possible that he could have given me herpes but his results will again come back negative?

You'll need to know say what tests you had before, did you test negative for both HSV-1 and HSV-2 in the past?

Also, some people can remain negative on the tests even while being infected.  It's pretty rare for HSV-2, somewhat more common for HSV-1, but it does happen.

And if you just have swelling, but without sores/lesions, herpes is far from a sure bet.  It could be plenty of other things.

Don't jump to any conclusions until you get your test results back.  Keep us updated with the results!
