First, you really should have told the doctor about the oral sex but I understand. It is embarrassing :)
Are the glands under your jaw swollen? Because your symptoms sounds like a bacterial throat infection. I had one recently and it started with a crazy fever and it hurt so much to swallow. My guess is that your doc is assuming you have Group A Strep which the penicillin should fix no problem. Just please please please please take it properly and take ALL of it. Even if you are better and you still have pills left, take them all. If you don't, there can still be a small amount of the bacterial left and they can reinfect you and even possibly mutate and contribute to antibiotic resistance.
Now if your throat does not get better, go back to the doc and get a different antibiotic because some strains of Group A Strep are resistant to penicillin but let's hope it doesn't come to that.
I doubt this is an STD but I think you should get tested for peace of mind.
Will the penicillin help?? Don't know, would have to follow up with your Dr.
